AMSA 2026 MERCHANDISE

This artwork created by Lynnice Letty Church, tells the story of connection between Freshwater Country and Saltwater Country, reflecting the journey of water, knowledge, people and culture across landscapes and generations.

At the centre of the artwork is a turtle, symbolising the enduring connection between the freshwater systems of Ngunnawal Country and the saltwater environments of Yuin Country. The turtle represents both the freshwater turtles found within the rivers, creeks and wetlands of Ngunnawal Country and the sea turtles that travel the coastal waters of Yuin Country. As a cultural and ecological bridge between inland and coastal environments, the turtle reflects the journey of water, knowledge, people and stories across Country. It reminds us that all waterways are connected, with freshwater systems eventually flowing to the sea, linking communities, ecosystems and generations through a shared responsibility to care for Country.

Surrounding the turtle are gathering circles and flowing patterns that symbolise waterways, ripples of knowledge and the exchange of ideas. These elements reflect the movement of water from the Murrumbidgee River and its tributaries through connected river systems and ultimately to the ocean. Just as water connects landscapes, knowledge connects people, communities and disciplines.

The artwork also acknowledges Canberra and Ngunnawal Country as a place of gathering, learning and knowledge sharing. The gathering circles represent the coming together of marine scientists, researchers, students, Traditional Custodians and communities from across Australia. Like rivers converging into larger waterways, the conference creates a space where diverse perspectives and knowledge systems come together to create positive impact.

The cool blues and turquoise tones reflect both freshwater and marine environments, highlighting the interconnected nature of inland waterways and ocean ecosystems. The flowing patterns surrounding the turtle symbolise movement, innovation and the continuous exchange of knowledge that contributes to healthier waterways, oceans and communities.

Created for the 2026 Australian Marine Sciences Association Conference, this artwork celebrates the theme "Marine Science with Impact." It recognises that meaningful impact begins with connection—to Country, to culture, to water and to each other. It reflects the understanding that the health of our oceans begins upstream, and that caring for freshwater systems, marine environments and cultural knowledge are shared responsibilities that benefit future generations.
