Beth O'Sullivan

The Australian National University

Beth is a PhD candidate in marine ecology and design at the Australian National University, specialising in coral reef restoration substrates and engineered reef ecosystems. Her research integrates marine ecology, material science, and emerging technologies to develop environmentally sustainable alternatives to conventional artificial reef structures. Through critically examining the ecological interactions between biological communities and engineered substrates, Beth's work addresses key challenges in reef restoration design, optimising material properties, substrate colonization dynamics, and ecological function. Her interdisciplinary approach combines field-based marine ecology methods, materials characterisation, and design principles to advance the development of ecologically responsive reef restoration scaffolds.
